Councillor Zorchinsky used the moment this Shavua Tov to celebrate what she described as a win for the entire Jewish community and for Israel.
Last week, the councillor expressed anger over an apparent pro-Hamas protest planned in front of the Israeli consulate, a location she described as especially vulnerable for innocent Jewish people and supporters of Israel. For many in the community, the possibility of such a demonstration taking place near the consulate raised serious concerns about safety, intimidation, and the right of Jewish citizens to feel protected in public spaces.
However, the protest was ultimately blocked, and the pro-Hamas demonstrators were not able to attend because of severe weather conditions.
For Councillor Zorchinsky, this was more than a cancelled protest. It was a symbolic victory.
“This is a huge win for Jewish safety,” she said. “At a time when Jewish communities are facing rising hostility, every moment where intimidation fails is a moment worth recognizing.”
The councillor emphasized that Jewish safety is not a political luxury, but a basic right. She added that public spaces around Jewish institutions, Israeli diplomatic offices, synagogues, and community centers must remain safe for families, students, seniors, and all innocent people.
The blocked protest also served as a reminder that anti-Israel hostility can quickly create fear among Jewish communities, especially when demonstrations take place near sensitive Jewish or Israeli locations.
As the new week begins, Councillor Zorchinsky framed the moment as a message of resilience.
“This Shavua Tov, we celebrate strength, protection, and the fact that our community stood firm,” she said. “Jewish safety matters. Israel matters. And today, we take the win.”
