GPT-5.5 retirement notice sets an October 14 deadline for ChatGPT and Codex

OpenAI says the change covers ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex, while the API is outside its scope.

OpenAI says GPT-5.5 will leave ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex on October 14, 2026. The notice, included in its September 14–18 product digest, applies across plans and explicitly excludes the OpenAI API.

For people using Codex through ChatGPT sign-in, OpenAI recommends GPT-5.6 Sol as the replacement. Its guidance also calls for updating saved model choices, workspace defaults, custom agents, scheduled tasks and scripts that still select GPT-5.5.

The practical distinction is between a model chosen in an interactive chat and one saved inside an automated workflow. Changing the former does not establish that the latter has been updated. Teams can use the notice to inventory those settings before the deadline.
