Life and remembrance

Raoul Sobhi Mizrahi worked with electrical tools and supplies in Beirut. Accounts describe him as an engineer and business owner, one of the Lebanese Jews who continued to live and work in the city as the civil war narrowed the community around them.

He was abducted in July 1984 and was found dead days later near Beirut airport. Sources disagree on the precise day of his abduction and recovery. His death was the first in the sequence remembered on this wall.

Kirsten E. Schulze attributes the campaign to the Organization of the Oppressed of the Earth, a group that claimed links with Hizb'allah. Contemporary accounts differ on some dates, occupations, spellings, and the fate of individual victims; those differences are preserved rather than silently resolved.
