Selim Mourad Jamous

Life and remembrance

Selim Mourad Jamous served as secretary of the Lebanese Jewish community. In a community made small by years of war and emigration, that office connected its people, records, synagogue, and leadership.

He was abducted in West Beirut on 15 August 1984. Schulze reports that no subsequent news of him emerged. Decades later, his family has continued to ask for information about where he was held and what happened to him.

Kirsten E. Schulze attributes the campaign to the Organization of the Oppressed of the Earth, a group that claimed links with Hizb'allah. Contemporary accounts differ on some dates, occupations, spellings, and the fate of individual victims; those differences are preserved rather than silently resolved.
